Magnet Schools

Just wanted to get some input from you guys. I was recently told that the Alaska Board of Education would be sending officers to Kotzebue to examine the possiblity of opening a Magnet school in the community. Tenatively, the magnet school would be an alternative educational option to juniors and seniors in highschool in Kotzebue and the surrounding villages. Those students who wish to continue their education in either a technical school or college would be encouraged to enroll in the school where they would also live. My experience in the school system in Kotzebue leads me to believe that it could be highly beneficial. Local teachers have told me that the kids in Kotzebue are great, but the support of parents and families encouraging the students is lacking. With the students living in the school it may be easier to get them to conform and commit to their education because they will be living a more structured life. I do question the junior and senior only thing. I think all students, grades 9 through 12 should have the option. Get 'em while their young, ya know?

This is going to be an interesting proposition if it in fact passes. I like the idea of magnet schools for the most part since they give students some choices about the kind of programs they can pursue. In the case of the proposed magnet school in Kotzebue, it sounds like it would provide some interesting alternatives for students who were not satisfied with "normal" public education by presenting a more rigorous academic focus and more structure.

In a large district like Fairbanks, such a school would make a lot of sense. I wonder, though, if it's the right approach in a smaller community like Kotzebue. I assume there is only one high school in Kotzebue, and that the perception of it is that it does not do a very good job of equipping students for college or technical school. If that's the case, why not simply make the current high school into a "magnet" with increased emphasis on structure and academics? The prospect of having two schools in the community is unsettling to me. If the "magnet" school is focused on academics and structure, what is the regular high school focused on? Aren't we all supposed to be focused on academics and structure? What happens if all the intelligent, motivated students go to the magnet school? What does that leave in the regular school? It will be interesting to see how these things play out.

Regarding boarding 9th and 10th graders--I think that if they are mature enough to want a focused school not available in their communities, they are certainly capable of boarding at the magnet school. Joanna is right--get 'em while they're young.
